This trio follows the story of the Greek satyr Marsyas who, after picking up Athena's cursed aulos, challenges Apollo to a music contest. Marsyas and his aulos, represented by the flute and clarinet, battle against Apollo and his harp, handled here by the guitar. Although written as a single continuous movement, the work contains several contrasting sections ranging from brooding lyricism to rhythmic vivacity.
