La Danza del Marsyas
flute, clarinet & guitar
for Trio Altrove 1.3
(dur. 9 minutes)
World Premiere: March 11, 2012 - Trio Altrove 1.3
Limonaia di Villa Montalvo - Florence, Italy
This trio follows the story of the Greek satyr Marsyas who had the unfortunate opportunity of picking up Athena's cursed double oboe (aulos) and then foolishly challenging Apollo to a music contest. Marsyas and his aulos, represented by the flute and clarinet, battle against Apollo and his harp, handled here by the guitar. Although rendered as a single continuous movement, the music contains several contrasting sections ranging from brooding lyricism to rhythmic vivacity. Needless to say, things didn't turn out so well for Marsyas.
